TITTLE TATTLE

December 2022

Sponsored by Harden Congregational Church

 Editor’s Note

Taking part in, or watching, the Remembrance services and other events, a few weeks ago, people were committing themselves to making the world a better place and working for peace. Was anybody actually serious about this stated intention or was it all just a lot of empty words?

Remembrance Day always brings to mind the terrible experiences men, women and children had to go through in wars past. I often think particularly of the children in conflict situations. What effect did the horror of war have on the children of this country, as they experienced bombing, air raids, separation from family, loss of loved ones, shortage of food and rationing and perhaps, worst of all, the insecurity of not knowing what the future might bring?

In 2022, our children will enjoy the festive season, in safety, surrounded by family and friends, cushioned  from the reality of war. Let us not forget that, in the here and now, in countries like Ukraine, for so many children this isn’t their reality.

I don’t know about you but I find it so easy to push world events to the back of my mind, after a time, as if they have somehow gone away. I find myself switching off from news items on the TV as if terrible happenings have become commonplace. The waving of flags, the hanging of ribbons, the humanitarian fundraising have been placed on the back burner or disappeared altogether.

Should we renew our efforts to show our support for those experiencing war on our doorstep today, in any way we can? Wouldn’t that be a true act of remembrance for those who gave their lives fighting against tyranny all those years ago?

Whatever our faith, or lack of it, let’s pray

for the children of Ukraine this Christmas.

Hope

[a poem for Ukraine]

 Dream a million dreams tonight

While rest falls upon your eyes

For better moments yet to come

To cast light upon despondencies

And champion heroes unsung

If only to be free of fears unspoken

To expectantly greet the beckoning dawn

Wistful yet ever aware

Of the resonant realities

But faith does not desert us here

Beyond these towering shadows

Lies our alternate ending

While we live, there is yet hope

Preludes

The winter evening settles down

With smell of steaks in passageways.

Six o’clock.

The burnt-out ends of smoky days.

And now a gusty shower wraps

The grimy scraps

Of withered leaves about your feet

And newspapers from vacant lots;

The showers beat

On broken blinds and chimney-pots,

And at the corner of the street

A lonely cab-horse steams and stamps

And then the lighting of the lamps.

[T. S. Eliot]

First Sight

Lambs that learn to walk in snow

When their bleating clouds the air

Meet a vast unwelcome, know

Nothing but a sunless glare.

Newly stumbling to and fro

All they find, outside the fold,

Is a wretched width of cold.

As they wait beside the ewe,

Her fleeces wetly caked, there lies

Hidden round them, waiting too,

Earth’s immeasurable surprise.

They could not grasp it if they knew,

What so soon will wake and grow

Utterly unlike the snow.

[Philip Larkin]

The Oberammergau Passion Play 2022

According to legend: an outbreak of bubonic plague devastated Bavaria during the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648). The village of Oberammergau remained plague-free until 25 September 1633, when a man named Kaspar Schisler returned home after working in the nearby village of Eschenlohe. Over the next 33 days, 81 villagers would die, half of Oberammergau’s population.  On 28 October 1633, the villagers vowed that if God spared them from the plague, they would perform a play every 10 years depicting the life and death of Jesus. Nobody died of plague in Oberammergau after that vow, and the villagers kept their word to God by performing the passion play for the first time in 1634. The play has been put on every 10th year since (with a few exceptions and changes due to war and pandemic).

In January 2018 we booked a tour to Bavaria to see the 42nd Passion Play in September 2020, knowing we had to book early to get good seats.  We had no idea then that we’d have to wait till September 2022 for the trip but it was definitely worth the wait.  The play involves over 2,000 people – actors, musicians, stage technicians, and others, all residents of the village who performed 110 times to audiences of over 4,000 people between 14 May and 2 October.  It’s lengthy – 5 hours – starting at 2.30 pm and finishing at 10.30 pm – but there is a break for dinner. We enjoyed it so much that we didn’t feel it was too long.

The dialogue is all in German but we were given an English translation to follow.  The acting, setting, music and the choir were exceptional, however, for me the show was stolen by the children and all the live animals who appeared on stage, camels, donkeys, horses, sheep, goats and doves!

The next play will be happening in 2030 –book early to avoid disappointment!

Harden Primary School – Term 1 2022

We are well into our first term at Harden Primary School and the children have started on another exciting learning journey.   Lots of interesting topics are being studied and the children are enthusiastic when talking about what they have been learning.

The school’s Harvest Festival took place on 21st October 2022.  Each class performed a small presentation about an aspect linked to Harvest for their families.  As usual, the children were amazing, and the parents and visitors enjoyed the service.

This year we have launched a new programme across school called ‘My Happy Mind’.  This programme is NHS backed and helps to build resilience, balance and happy minds both at home and school. It is taught to every child in school from early years to year 6 and is grounded in the latest science and research about what it takes to create positive wellbeing.

Our year 5 class started the year off with a 3-day residential to Whitby.  During the visit the children took part in a town trail, fossil hunting, a visit to the replica Endeavour ship, a boat ride, jet polishing and a visit to the RLNI.  They stayed at the Youth Hostel at the top of the 199 steps so climbed the steps many times! At least it made them sleep!  Back at school year 5 have continued their learning in the classroom by comparing physical and human features and creating art work of the Whitby Abbey.

All our classes have had the opportunity to participate in a forest school session.  This took place at St Ives and the children had to work together to build dens and use natural materials to solve problems. The sessions were finished off with building a fire and toasting marshmallows. We would like to thank the PTFA who raised money to pay for this opportunity.

We held an open evening  for new prospective parents on Thursday 24th November.  We welcomed all prospective parents to this event to find out more about our amazing school.

If you were unable to make this event and would like the opportunity to look around the school then please ring the school office to make alternative arrangements.

If you would like to out more about us, then please visit the school website at: www.hardenprimaryacademy.co.uk

Bingley Manorlands Support Group

Wish you a healthy and Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year.

THANK YOU to everyone who took part in or helped at the annual Harden Walks for Manorlands held in September. Previously hosted by Pete and Chris Bashforth in memory of their dear daughter Ruth, and with guidance from Pete it was hosted by our group this year, we held the day in the same style including plenty of tasty homemade cakes scones and biscuits enjoyed by walkers, and quite a few non-walkers too!

A total of 106 walkers completed the 3-, 5-, 10-, or 15-mile route from Harden Cricket Club, raising a fabulous £1,703 including gift aid. All in great spirit and with plenty of smiles, we had really good feedback and would like to repeat the event on September 30th, 2023, so that’s a diary date for all walkers or bakers.

Manorlands are running their tree recycling scheme this year, so if you have a real tree that needs collecting after Santa has visited, for a small donation the tree elves will come and take it safely away. Details to be advertised on Harden Neighbours facebook page.

Thank you for your continued support.

Jazz up Those Mince Pies this Christmas. !!!!!

These are usually an adult treat something you enjoy as you grow up. I hated them as a child, but now I love them.

Make your short crust pastry or buy frozen or ready mix. They all taste the same in the end.

Spoon your mincemeat into a basin and add a small (or medium) amount of whatever takes your fancy e.g. rum,  brandy, orange  liqueur, cinnamon, ginger, chocolate bits, almond flavouring. (or whatever else you enjoy). Stir well so that the flavour spreads evenly throughout all the pies.

Spoon fillings into pies but not too much so it bursts out of the casing.

You can finish here by just putting the lids on, pricking, brushing with milk and baking

Or

For a special treat cut back on the extra flavourings but put a small thin circle of marzipan on the pie before adding the lid. Some almond in the mincemeat is good if you enjoy a real kick of almond.

Or

Bake the pies without a lid and when they have cooled put a star shaped piece of marzipan on top or a star shaped piece of white fondant icing and decorate with something festive and edible.

If you have a pastry lid remember to sprinkle with icing sugar just before serving.

You can always make them with no extra flavourings but I have a sweet tooth so I sprinkle a little golden brown sugar on the mincemeat before putting on the lid.

Enjoy and wishing you all Christmas Blessings.

Patricia.

RDM Estate Planning & Wills

Lasting Powers of Attorney are essential to help protect your interests through your life. Making sure your Property & Finances, as well as your Health & Welfare are looked after if you’re not able to do it yourself.

These are extracts from Martin Lewis Money Saving Expert about the importance of Lasting Powers of Attorney’s.

“One person in the UK develops dementia every three minutes. Yet don’t assume relatives can just walk into a bank and access your money, even if it is to pay for your care. “

“Unless you’ve a Power of Attorney already, loved ones need to apply through court, which can be long and costly.”

I’m qualified through the Institute of Professional Will Writers to take instructions for Wills and Estate Planning, such as Lasting Powers of Attorney’s, Property Trusts, Asset Protection Trusts and changing property ownership from “Joint Tenancy” to “Tenancy in Common,” which can potentially help mitigate long term care costs.

As a property is often the main asset to be passed on to family, how would you feel if this was not the case due to not acting now?  There are various ways to make sure this happens, and yes, sooner the better as it can be too late to do anything about it.

I am also a fully qualified Financial Adviser and can help you with Investments, ISA’s and Pension advice.  You may have pensions in various places and would like to consolidate them into one plan, I can help you with this.

Please contact me via e-mail or phone to use this local service.

The Congs Clubhouse

For primary-age children

Harden Congregational Church.

The Congs Clubhouse had an open day on Wednesday 13th April and tested out a Holiday Club idea. A further Holiday Club took place in August. We have held Clubhouse meetings once a month on Saturday mornings since then.

Activities include games, stories, refreshments, craft, music and generally having fun.

At each event we have a different theme and the various activities fit around the theme.

In September we considered the importance of friendship, in October we celebrated harvest and the inequalities of food distribution around the world, in November we remembered those who have lost their lives in war and the need for peace and guess what; in December we will be preparing for Christmas!

There are still places available for the Clubhouse on Saturday, 10th December 10am-1pm.

£5 per session payable on the day. Half price for second child of the family.

We are hoping to run Holiday Clubs in the February 2023 half-term and the Easter holiday. Dates to be announced.

Harden & District Women’s Institute

It is 60 years this year since a group of ladies in Harden decided to set up a local WI.

You don’t have to be able to make jam and cakes or knit, sew or any other craft to be a member of the Women’s Institute. We are just a friendly bunch of ladies who meet on the 2nd Monday of every month [except for August] at 7.30pm in the Family Room of St. Saviour’s Church.

Our meetings usually start with a short “business” meeting when we give out all the information about what events are coming up. Then this is usually followed by a guest speaker or we organise a craft, games or quiz evening. And there is always time at the end to catch up with everyone or to make new friends over a cuppa and biscuits.

As well as our monthly meetings we have Craft, Scrabble and Book Clubs that regularly meet in one of our member’s houses. And our newest activity is a monthly Walking Group when we set off in the morning for a walk of about 4 miles followed by lunch where we are joined by other members who didn’t wish to walk.

Topics at our meetings recently have included chocolate, gardening, climate change, climbing up Everest Base Camp and bees. This year we’ve also had outings to Undercliffe Cemetery, Halifax Town Hall, Thackray Museum of Medicine and we’ve been shown

how to use a defibrillator and basic first aid.

Ladies – if this has aroused your interest, why don’t you come along to visit one of our meetings in the New Year? You are sure of a friendly welcome with no pressure to join!

The Book Club

Harden Congregational Church

The Book Club continues to meet every second Friday of the month, at 12 midday, at Harden Congregational Church.

We have 12 members, which is a manageable number for discussion, but we are always ready to welcome new members.

Tea and coffee is available.

There is no charge for membership. You can obtain copies of the books from the Club at competitive prices or arrange your own. A number of our members use Kindle.

We try to vary our reading matter and choose from different genres. It has been very surprising how many books we have enjoyed which we would probably never have taken down from the shelf if left to our own devices. We hope this is a sign of broadening our minds rather than confirming our prejudices!

Over the past three months we have read and discussed The Future Housewives of America, the Mayor of Casterbridge and The Thursday Murder Club. They have turned out to be an interesting and varied combination; some being loved, some hated and not necessarily by the same people all of the time!

The discussion lasts just under an hour. Most people have something to say, some have a lot to say and some prefer just to listen. It doesn’t matter which of those groups you may fall into, everybody is welcome. Why not come along and see what you think?

Anyone interested should contact Sheila Driver

sheila.driver@outlook.com

or turn up to our next meeting on Friday 9th December at midday and look us over.

Warm Spaces at Harden Congs

We are pleased to be registered as a warm space on Wednesdays from 1-3pm in the lounge and on Fridays from 9.30- 12.00 in church. We are particularly pleased to welcome anyone who would like to keep warm and cosy but may be concerned about turning on the heating at home. Spread the word.

COGS

Designated a warm space

COGS is our new group for socializing.

Do you or anyone you know feel you would like to meet more people, have someone to talk to and maybe do some fun, gentle activities? Would you enjoy some company and the chance to make new friends? COGS is for you then!

Come to the Congregational Church on a Wednesday (term time only) from 1pm to 3pm and share a brew and biscuit or cake and discover something new.

Each session includes a short activity that you may like to join in with. So far, we have played board games, had a talk about Betty’s teashops, done some crafts for remembrance and watched a video and chatted about the history of Harden, Wilsden and Bingley.

Coming up in the next few weeks we will be making advent wreaths and having a soup and carol singing session. Watch out for the posters in your local shops to let you know what is happening each week. Looking forward to seeing you. (COGS is a registered warm space)

We have a small charity stall selling cards, stationery and other useful bits and pieces for very reasonable prices.

Apart from a small contribution to the rent, the money raised goes to different charities each half-term.  £122 was donated to MIND last half-term. This half-term money will be given to Harden Primary PTFA which helps to fund, amongst other things, out of school activities for all the children, regardless of circumstances.

Walk through the door and you will be assured a warm welcome.

Harden Primary School Choir

An additional treat for Friday morning 9th December –

We are to be entertained by the choir from Harden Primary School. All are welcome . There is no charge and you don’t need a ticket!

Come and see [and listen to] what a  brilliant contribution the children and staff at the school make to our village.

You will also be able to have first viewing of the  ‘Nativity Tableau’  the children of Harden Primary’s handiwork created with their own fair hands [approximately 210 pairs of hands to be exact!]

N.B. If you are not able to come in the morning there will be an opportunity to see the Tableau in the afternoon from 3-4pm.

Harden Children’s Gala Committee

After 2 years without a Gala due to COVID the event in June 2022 was a great success even if the flypast by the Spitfire was cancelled due to weather conditions.

Before the Gala we were concerned that many of our committee were becoming a bit long in the tooth and some fresh blood was needed so we launched a major recruitment drive. We are pleased to advise that there was a good response and in September we held a get together so all the new people could meet us.

It appears that they were not put off and a number of keen new people (together with some old stagers) attended the AGM on 14 November.

There Vicky Foster was re-elected as Chair – she needs some more practice after 2 galas of her tenure were cancelled!

The big news however was that we voted to change the criteria for the Queen and other officials at the Gala. Over the years the number of children from villages other than Harden who attend Harden School and consider themselves part of the village has increased. So from next year’s gala as we move into our 50th year the Gala Queen and the other officials need to either live in Harden OR attend Harden School. Just to show that we are moving with the times there will be a draw for a Gala King as well as a Gala Queen. The two attendants can be boys or girls.

The village Christmas tree was to be supplied and erected by the Harden Children’s Gala Committee members on the morning of Sunday 4 December and the lights switched on that evening followed by refreshments organised by the Village Council in the church rooms.

It has also become a tradition for the lights to be switched on by one of the children of the village or the school using the “Big Lever”. The name of the child who performs this duty is drawn out at the Harden Children’s Gala Christmas Party at 6.30pm at Harden School on Friday 2 December which is the same time as the Gala Queen and the other officials will be chosen.

We trust that all these opportunities will mean there will be a huge turn out at the Christmas Party

We wish you all a very merry Christmas!

Congregational Busy Babies

Who would have thought that when Jane and I decided in January 2012.to open a toddler group at the Congregational Church that we would still be welcoming our lovely toddlers almost 10 years later. Our original members are now at upper school and Jane is now onto offspring number 3, so a lot has changed in that time. Sadly Jane has recently returned to work and is greatly missed but her youngest, Felicity, is still a regular visitor with her Dad!

The group meets every Friday morning, term time only, from 9.30 – 11 am and includes messy play, painting and craft, lots of lovely toys suitable for all ages, snack time and of course song time at the end. Our little ones vary in age from birth to 4 years so hopefully they will be with us at the group for several years to come.

If you would like a glimpse of what our friendly little group is all about you can see some photos (taken with carer consent) on our church website Hardencongs.org.uk.

It would be lovely to welcome more little ones so for more information please see our private Congregational Busy Babies Facebook page or contact Madge on 07717567124

Hope to see you soon

Harden Players

After the success of Harden Players’ return to stage following the pandemic closures in March with the fantastic “Treasure Island”, it was difficult to imagine a production for the autumn that would once again capture the spirit of community and fun previously so evident in the group.

“Hi de Hi” exceeded all expectations, however, and we were so pleased to see familiar faces, as well as some welcome new ones, in the audiences over the middle two weekends of October. It was particularly exciting to have a debut Director, John Hamilton, at the helm; supported by Players’s stalwarts Sheila Shenton as MD and Jackie Smith as Stage Manager, John had only ever been on stage once previously, as a stand-in during “Treasure Island”, so it was brilliant to see the enthusiasm for the group – and for putting on a fab production – so evident in new members.

An almost decade-long run on our TV screens during the 80s, Hi de Hi’s 1959 setting in an English holiday camp was evocative for a whole host of ages, and it was great to introduce some of the music and fashion of the time to younger audience members! The cast were not only phenomenal in role, (particularly a couple of actors taking their first principal roles!) but had the best time rehearsing and performing; definitely one for the memory banks. Our thanks to John and the team for pulling together such a wonderful show.

We are hoping to archive a history of Players’s performances from its long and distinguished history, partly in memory of Brian Foster who was an active member for many years, but also as a way of celebrating the continuity and changes embodied in such a thriving community organisation. If you have old copies of programmes, scripts, or recordings (Betamax and VHS welcomed!) we would love to get them digitised. Please contact the players on hardenplayers@hotmail.co.uk.

We are always looking for new members, but this year we are especially keen to hear from anyone willing to lend a hand OFF stage – there’s no need to commit to a regular timeslot, we just need to be able to get in touch with options for volunteering; whether it’s moving furniture, sitting at the lighting desk, going on the tea rota, please do get in touch! We are on Facebook, or you can email us on the address above.

Thanks for the continued support of Village residents in making Harden Players such a wonderful community group – we look forward to seeing you all for our next production of Mother Goose in the Spring of 2023!

When The Qatar World Cup Leaves You Cold…

As you may be aware, the World Cup is to be played this winter from that footballing bastion Qatar. Perfect. What could be better than slumping on a sofa with a warm mug of tea whilst watching a bunch of variously famous players kick a newly branded ball around a bowling green in the scorching Qatari sun? What could be better indeed? Well, this actually. Standing on a terrace with a scalding cup of Bovril whilst watching a bunch of variously unknown players kick a once branded ball around a mud bath in the freezing Yorkshire sleet. I’m talking non-league football. Here are six reasons to give the World Cup a miss and the non-league a go:

Welcome. The weather may be cold but the welcome will be warm. Non-league clubs need people through the turnstiles so they will always be glad to see you, especially if you also avail yourself of a programme and a prize draw ticket. Don’t worry if you know nothing about the two sides for there will always be somebody on hand to give you a full A to Z of the team sheet. However, should you grow bored of hearing about the 36 year old right back who has just signed from Bridlington but once had trials for Hartlepool, fear not;  for non-league offers the great advantage of..

Space. There is always plenty of room. You are free to move away from the bore, change ends at half time or even circumnavigate the whole ground in pursuit of a non-existent wind break. At some point in your perambulation you will reach the tea hut and another big plus of non-league….

Refreshments. The food is often excellent, piping hot and locally sourced, so, whether it is chips at Chorley (superb) or falafels at Farsley ( don’t know if they do them but they ought to) feel free to tuck in heartily. Ale buffs will be well served too, and often at this level you can take your beer pitch side. The acme in this regard is Matlock Town whose combination of beer terrace and football terrace is a thing of beauty. Once the game starts you will no doubt be thinking….

Tactics.  Modern TV pundits, with all their talk of “false nines”, “holding midfielders” and “Christmas trees” would have you believe that football is a complicated game. This is rubbish. Football is not chess. Football is not cricket. Football is simple. A single trip to non-league will convince you that “Shoot!” and “Squeeze!” are all the tactics that anyone will ever need. Now you have reached half time and excitement mounts, for it is the moment of the…

Prize Draw. This may not match Euromillions on pounds but it beats it on probabilities. The paucity of the crowd makes winning a prize a distinct possibility and what better souvenir could you ask for than a six year old bottle of Liebfraumilch  with all its previous raffle tickets still attached? If you fancy something different, then head to Harrogate Railway Athletic, whose prize of ten cuts of meat certainly makes it a draw to remember. Unless you are vegetarian. When the ninety minutes are up, and you attempt to shuffle some warmth back into reluctant limbs, you will doubtless reflect how…

Travel Broadens the Mind. Why, if it wasn’t for non-league, I’d never have gone to Ossett.

I trust you are convinced by these arguments (to be frank I fail to see how it could be otherwise) and I shall simply conclude by paraphrasing a legendary children’s programme. For the duration of the World Cup why don’t you just switch off your television set and go out and watch non-league instead?

Message from the Minister

How quickly the festive season seems to be coming upon us! Are you ready for it? It seems that there is so much to do. At a time when so many people are worried about heating their homes and the cost of the weekly shop, it seems a big task to be finding the funds for the perfect Christmas! But what is the perfect Christmas? What does Christmas mean to you?

For many people it is a time for family. A time to be together. And we’ve all seen the adverts showing us what a wonderful, perfect family event it can be. But this isn’t real life. Many people put themselves under pressure to create this elusive perfect Christmas where everyone is surrounded by love, everyone gets the perfect present, the table is heaving with yummy food and there’s enough for everyone and then some left-overs as well. I’ve been lucky enough to have some wonderful Christmases. But they were never perfect.

Let’s enjoy the festive season but don’t put yourself under pressure – keep it simple. After all it started as a celebration. We can make it as large or small as we want. It’s not a competition. It’s a time to be still and think about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The time of preparation known as advent should be a quiet, reflective time.

And Christmas Day? We already have the greatest gift of all. We can share a simple meal. We can show all people love and kindness. So, if you’re looking for the perfect Christmas, look to that first Christmas and the message of love that God sent through his son.

I wish you all a blessed Christmas and look forward to welcoming you to one of our Christmas services or seeing you out and about in the village. God Bless.

24 hour independent funeral service

covering all areas.

[Member SAIF and BIFD]

It’s not a task many people relish tackling, but                                                        Dame Mary Berry revealed at the Cheltenham                                           Literature Festival that she had chosen the                                                             music she hoped would be played at her funeral.                                               The former Bake Off Star said, “It’s a bit                                                   morbid to think about a funeral but I’m really                                                   not too bothered because I won’t be here!”                                                               She went on “I’d like to have a party before it                                                happens.  I love having people round and sharing.                                                 I keep everyone else’s funeral sheets and tick the                                           things I like.”

The death of the Queen in September certainly                                               got people talking about the subject, many                                              prompted to think about their own arrangements.

During my time in Christian Ministry and latterly                                               as a Funeral Director it’s always helpful when                                                people have expressed their wishes before the                                              event.  The phrase “It’s good to talk” also applies                                               to subjects like funerals.  At very emotional and                                        distressing times it is easier to decide on                                        arrangements if you already know what someone’s                                                      wishes are and so know you are doing what they                                                      wanted.

Robert Waddington’s Village Undertakers offer a                                           free service to help you think through your final                                               wishes – see our website for details:                                             www.villageundertakers .co.uk                                                                    because not all funerals should be the same as                                               Mary Berry’s – or the Queens!

David writes on the Funeral Guide website:  “I was                                       really lucky that mum had planned ahead & met with                                      Robert well before his services being required. She                                        had a clear view of what she wanted, which made                                                    things so much easier at a difficult time for the family.                                       Robert was extremely professional & understanding                                         and really couldn’t do any more to ease this loss for us.                                     Mum was 82 when she passed but had a lot of health                                        issues in recent years, which probably made her think                                       about arrangements. It’s certainly made me consider                                               making my own plans, anything to help those left behind cope. I certainly would recommend the personal service I’ve received, compassion & understanding from a genuinely nice chap.”

HBHS Annual Show

That went well!!

Thank you to everyone who helped to make Harden Beck Horticultural Society’s 59th Show such a success after an enforced absence of 3 years! The show field,  behind the Golden Fleece,  was packed with people eager to get together,  renew friendships and enjoy the atmosphere of this traditional Yorkshire village show.

Prior to the opening of the event a minutes silence was observed in memory of Queen Elizabeth II.
Then the Hall Royd Brass Band played the national anthem, ‘God Save the King.’
“The minute of silent reflection was impeccably observed; a very poignant moment for all those in attendance ” said Andy Macdonald,  for the Society.

Whilst the number of exhibits was slightly down on previous years there was still plenty to see. The brass band played, the sun came out and people scampered into the show tent to look at the exhibits or make sure they were at the front of the queue for sandwiches, pies, cakes and tea! There were some fabulous exhibits; the children’s classes particularly well represented.

The Society would like to thank the local businesses and individuals who supported us with sponsorship,  through adverts in the schedule  and the donation of very generous prizes for the raffle. We are extremely grateful.
The auction of produce, which brings the show to a close, was one of the best ever.
Thanks also to Keighley News for an excellent report on their digital platform and a full page with colour photographs in the printed newspaper.

Andy Macdonald, for the Society,  said ” it was a real team effort to get the show up and running again and a great opportunity to bring our local community together after such difficult recent times.
We are already thinking about the 60th show next year”!

The Society welcomes new helpers and members.
A simple way to support the Society is to join the 200 club monthly draw.
There are a few tickets left.  Cost £20 to enter 4 draws a month with 4 prizes of £40. There is a super draw of 6 numbers in December.

Only three portions were eaten in total.

Harden Scarecrow Festival

Back in July the village held its second scarecrow festival , this one with the theme of Hobbies and Pastimes. A fantastic 32 entries were on show for the weekend and again I was amazed by the variety and the ingenuity of the entries.

All money raised was sent direct to Sue Ryder Manorlands, and this year we were just a few pence short of £250. The first year we raised over £1,000 but there was no competition for things to do then as we were still under COVID restrictions. Given the change in circumstances I think we all did very well raising so much this year, but I would love to increase it again next year.

The third festival will be 8th and 9th of July  2023 (get the date in your diaries now). The theme will be announced early next year

It would be wonderful if you could consider having a stall alongside your scarecrow. Perhaps a book sale, a tombola or a cake stall, or maybe you have a far more creative idea! These really do help the fundraising total but also add to the enjoyment and fun of the weekend.

Please watch out locally in the new year for announcements, and maybe even the odd scarecrow appearing to publicise the theme.

Many thanks to everyone who spent time making the displays and to all those who bought the programmes and walked the trail

Different Christmas Traditions

In Norwegian folklore, witches and evil spirits come out on Christmas Eve to do mischief.

So families hide their brooms to stop them from being stolen for a midnight ride. Sometimes they even burn spruce logs in the fireplace to stop them from coming down the chimney.

According to an old Ukranian legend, a poor widow and her children found a Christmas tree in their garden but didn’t have money to decorate it.

However, when they woke up the next morning, it was covered by a spider’s web, which turned silver and gold in the morning light. In honour of this Ukrainians hang spider web-shaped decorations on their trees to bring good luck.

A Relection

Let us pause to listen to the Christmas message of love, proclaimed still, to a troubled world.

Let us act, as if what we do in love, makes a difference.

It does.
